Before diving into networking, it’s crucial to define your ideal client. Knowing who you want to target will help you select the right networking groups and events where these potential clients or their influencers are likely to be present. For example, if your ideal client is a local small business owner, joining business chambers and local entrepreneurial groups will be more beneficial than broader, non-targeted events.

Some of these are specific to my experience and location in Albuquerque, NM, but I do offer them as examples and give some advice on where to find similar organizations in your local area. 

1. National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO): A national organization supporting women entrepreneurs with resources, education, and networking opportunities.

2. Albuquerque Women in Business for Good (AWIBFG) Giving Circle: This group focuses on women who want to make an impact through philanthropy and business, offering a supportive network for community-minded professionals. If you don’t live in Albuquerque, NM then I recommend checking out Grapevine.org to look for a giving circle in your own community. Grapevine is the parent organization of AWIBFG and they have chapters all over the United States.

3. Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce's Women in Business Committee: This committee within the AHCC provides a platform for women in business to connect, support each other, and grow professionally. You may have noticed that I’m not Hispanic, but I was invited to this group and they have been very supportive and welcoming. Again, if you don’t live in Albuquerque, check out your local Chambers of Commerce. Oftentimes an ethnic chamber might be a better fit than the US Chamber of Commerce, but you will want to check them all out before picking one or two. 

4. Local BNI Chapter: Business Network International (BNI) is a structured networking group where members help each other find referrals and grow their businesses. With this group, each chapter only has one representative of any particular industry. In my case, I would be the only Virtual Assistant in the chapter that I am looking to join. If that slot is already filled in the first group you’re looking at, check out other groups. I think there are about 11 chapters in New Mexico and 6 are in Albuquerque. BNI has chapters all over the United States. 

5. Meetup Groups: Look for local Meetup groups related to your industry, business interests, or ideal clients; these can be great for informal networking and learning. 

6. Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs): SBDCs offer workshops, mentorship, and networking opportunities specifically for small business owners. Here in New Mexico I take classes and have a mentor through WESST. Another option is SCORE. They have offices all over the US. Your local area may have other SBDCs under other names. These are great places to learn more about running a small business and possibly networking with other entrepreneurs who may need your services. 

7. Industry-Specific Trade Associations: Depending on your field, there may be specific associations or professional groups that can provide targeted networking opportunities. Trade associations can be a good place to start. Again, these are places where you can learn more about running a business in your industry, and perhaps network with someone in a similar business but who might need whatever services you happen to offer in that industry.

8. LinkedIn Groups: Join LinkedIn groups relevant to your industry to engage with potential clients and other professionals virtually. LinkedIn is a social networking platform that specializes in connecting business professionals and entrepreneurs together. There may be specific groups where you can connect with others in your industry or adjacent to your industry who may be in need of your services.

Networking is an essential component of growing your small business. By defining your ideal client and engaging with the right groups, you can make the most of your networking efforts. Though it might seem daunting at first, remember that each connection is a step towards building a stronger business. With patience and persistence, you'll find that the effort invested in networking will pay off, leading to new opportunities and lasting relationships.

Social media platforms like Facebook and Google My Business allow you to provide accurate business information, such as your address, phone number, and hours of operation. Consistency in this information across all platforms can improve your local search rankings. Additionally, positive reviews and interactions on social media can enhance your reputation and boost local SEO efforts.

Social Signals and Search Rankings: Although social signals are not direct ranking factors, they can influence how search engines perceive your website. High engagement rates on social media posts can lead to increased visibility in search results. For instance, if your content is frequently shared and discussed on social media, it may lead to more website visits, longer session durations, and lower bounce rates, all of which are positive signals for search engines.

Building Relationships and Authority: Social media allows you to connect with influencers, industry experts, and your target audience. Building relationships with these groups can lead to valuable backlinks to your website, a critical component of SEO. Moreover, social media engagement helps establish your business as an authority in your industry, which can improve your credibility and search rankings.

Content Longevity and Searchability: Content shared on social media can continue to drive traffic long after it's posted. Evergreen content, such as how-to guides or industry tips, can be reshared and discovered by new audiences over time. This ongoing exposure can help keep your website relevant in search engine results.

Self-care isn't a luxury; it's a necessity. It involves taking deliberate actions to maintain physical, mental, and emotional health. For entrepreneurs, neglecting self-care can lead to burnout, decreased productivity, and a negative impact on your personal life and business. Here’s why self-care is essential:

1. Sustained Energy Levels: Running a business requires long hours and constant decision-making. Regular self-care practices help maintain your energy levels, ensuring you can meet your business demands without feeling drained.

2. Enhanced Focus and Productivity: When you take time to recharge, you return to your work with a clearer mind, better focus, and improved productivity.

3. Improved Mental Health: Managing both a business and family stress can take a toll on your mental health. Self-care practices like mindfulness, exercise, and hobbies can reduce anxiety and improve your overall mood.

4. Better Decision Making: A well-rested and healthy mind makes better decisions. Self-care allows you to approach business challenges with a balanced perspective, leading to more effective problem-solving.

When family situations add to your stress, integrating self-care becomes even more critical. Here are some strategies to blend self-care with family responsibilities:

1. Involve Your Family, Friends, or Community: Share your business goals and challenges with your family. Their understanding and support can provide emotional relief and practical assistance. I have reached out for help and guidance to an organization in my community called WESST. Their mission is to help and train new entrepreneurs in how to set up and run their business. My counselor, Kevin Sierra Moran, has been HUGELY helpful in teaching me about the areas of business where I am not an expert.

2. Create Family Rituals: Establish regular family activities that everyone enjoys, whether it’s a weekly game night, a family walk, or a movie night. These rituals can strengthen family bonds and provide a welcome distraction from stress. In my own case, I take my dog, Molly, for walks 3-4 times/day. It gets me out of my apartment - where I both live and work - and we explore the neighborhood, enjoy the New Mexico desert sunshine, interact with our neighbors, and enjoy one another. In the evenings, I go and visit Mark in the hospital. Sometimes I take him a home-cooked dinner and we will play board games or watch a TV show we both enjoy. We spend time together loving and supporting one another. 

3. Seek Professional Help: Don’t hesitate to seek professional help if family stress becomes overwhelming. Therapists, counselors, and support groups can offer valuable guidance and support. This one is a bit harder for me right now because New Mexico has a chronic shortage of mental health professionals. I do reach out to the friends I've made here and they have been wonderfully supportive. 

4. Set Realistic Expectations: Be realistic about what you can achieve both in your business and family life. It’s okay to adjust your goals and expectations as needed. There are some evenings when I call Mark and tell him I just can't come visit tonight because I'm simply exhausted. He's been wonderful and will usually say, "The best way you can help take care of me is to take care of you." This happens about once every week or two. I just need some downtime - Mark calls it "Cathy time" - where I'm just relaxing and trying not to worry about anything else.
